Heavy industrial gearboxes power the worldβs most demanding machinery β from multi-megawatt wind turbines and massive mining conveyors to offshore drilling platforms and rolling mills. The gears inside these gearboxes are large, heavily loaded, and expected to operate reliably for decades. CNC hobbing machines play an essential role in producing these gears, offering the combination of large workpiece capacity, high cutting power, and precision control that heavy-duty gear manufacturing requires.

Wind turbine gearboxes step up rotor speed (typically 10β20 RPM) to generator speed (1000β1800 RPM) using a multi-stage combination of planetary and parallel shaft stages. The ring gears, planet gears, and high-speed stage pinions are all produced by hobbing. Wind turbine gear modules commonly range from 8 to 30. Face widths can reach 400β600 mm. Crowned tooth profiles are standard to accommodate nacelle and rotor deflection under variable wind loads.
Mining conveyors, ball mills, rotary kilns, and crushers all use massive open gears and gearboxes. Mill pinions and girth gears (the large ring gears that encircle ball mills) can be several meters in diameter. These are produced on very large horizontal CNC hobbing machines with workpiece capacities exceeding 2000 mm diameter and with CNC tangential infeed systems for worm-type profiles on girth gears.
Ship propulsion gearboxes, marine winch gearboxes, and offshore drilling rig gearboxes require large, high-torque gears with stringent quality requirements (typically DIN 5β6 or better). Marine gears are often made from special seawater-resistant alloys and must meet classification society approvals (DNV, Lloydβs Register, Bureau Veritas).
Cement kiln drives, rolling mill pinion stands, and steel plant auxiliary drives all use very large, heavily loaded gearboxes. The gears experience high contact stresses and shock loads, requiring high-quality alloy steels, precise hobbing, and careful heat treatment and post-grind finishing.
